Business Name Selection

Business Name Selection works from the founder's chart and, where the family asks for it, a numerological check on the name. It is a traditional consultation and says nothing about trademark availability or registration, which have to be checked separately.

How it works

From your details to the answer

1

Share your birth details

Date, exact time of birth and place — the time to the minute is what makes the chart usable.

2

The chart is cast and read

Your Janma Kundali, divisional charts, running dasha and current gochara are read together.

3

You receive the analysis

A written answer to the question you asked, with the placements it rests on stated plainly.

4

Talk it through

A call with the astrologer to go over the reading and the remedies, if you want one.

Guide

When is Business Name Selection useful?

It is asked for when starting a venture, at a rebranding, or when a shortlist of names needs narrowing.

Astrologers differ on method — ayanamsa, dasha system and house division are all matters on which respected traditions disagree. A reading states which conventions it follows, and describes tendency and timing rather than settling a decision for you.

Scope

What the consultation covers

1

The founder's chart, since a firm has no birth moment the way a person does

2

The seventh and tenth houses, read for trade and for standing

3

A numerological check on the shortlist, where the family asks for one

4

A shortlist narrowed on the traditional reasoning, with that reasoning stated

In the chart

What the astrologer reads for Business Name Selection

The founder's chart
There is no chart for a name. What is read is the chart of the person starting the venture, which is the same reasoning that applies to Business Astrology generally.
The seventh and tenth bhavas
The seventh for trade and the tenth for standing are the houses a naming consultation works from, and the dignity of their lords is what a suggestion is weighed against.
Mercury as karaka
Mercury signifies commerce, communication and naming; traditional practice reads its condition when a name is being chosen for a trading concern.
The numerological check
Where a family asks for it, the letters of a candidate name are given values and totalled. This is a separate system from jyotisha and is treated as an addition rather than as part of the chart reading.
12loss1self2wealth3effort11gains4home10work5children9fortune8change7marriage6debtLAGNAbhava 1 — the rising signhouses run clockwise
Read from the founder's chart, not the name's: the seventh for trade, the tenth for standing, the second for the speech and naming the house governs.

Sources

What is established, and what varies

The first list is what published practice describes consistently. The second is where schools, regions and sampradayams legitimately differ — and where the astrologer’s own tradition decides the answer rather than a general rule.

Consistently described

  • A firm has no birth moment in the sense a person does, so classical practice reads the proprietor's chart.
  • The seventh bhava governs trade and the tenth standing and occupation; Mercury is the karaka of commerce and communication.
  • Name numerology is a separate system from jyotisha, with its own letter values, and is not part of the classical chart reading.

Varies by tradition

  • Which numerological system is applied — Chaldean and Pythagorean assign different values to the same letters and reach different totals.
  • Whether a company can be given a chart of its own from an incorporation moment, which practitioners disagree on.
  • Whether the numerological check is offered at all, which some astrologers decline on the grounds that it is not part of jyotisha.

In plain terms

The vocabulary of naming a business

Business Name Selection works from the founder's chart — a firm has no birth moment in the sense a person does, so classical practice reads the proprietor — through the seventh bhava for trade, the tenth for standing, and Mercury as the karaka of commerce and speech, with a numerological check on the candidate names where the family asks for one. It is a traditional consultation. It says nothing about trademark availability, domain names or registration, which have to be checked separately and first, because a name the tradition favours and the registry refuses is not a name.

The founder's chart
The proprietor's, read as the chart the business is named from. Where there are partners, each chart is read on its own, and the name is chosen to sit well with all of them rather than with one.
The seventh bhava
Trade and partnership — the house classical practice reads for business, as distinct from the tenth. Its lord and the grahas in it are read for the character of enterprise the chart supports.
The tenth bhava
Standing and public position — what the business will be known as. Read with the seventh, because a name is precisely the point at which trade becomes standing.
Mercury, the karaka
The significator of commerce, speech and naming. Its dignity in the founder's chart qualifies the reading, and its sign is often what the tradition draws a starting sound from.
The numerological check
A value computed from the letters of a candidate name, in one of several systems — Chaldean and Pythagorean are the commonest — and compared against the founder's birth number. Offered where the family asks for it; a distinct practice from the chart reading, and described as one.
The starting sound
Some traditions draw a syllable for the business from the founder's Moon or from Mercury's sign, as a child's name is drawn from the pada. Custom rather than doctrine, and a reading should say which tradition it follows.

The name, and everything around it

A name is one step in starting a business, and the steps on either side of it have readings and muhurthams of their own.

Whether the chart supports the venture

Before the name, the question of whether the founder's chart inclines to enterprise at all — the seventh and tenth read for that, with the dasha.

Business Astrology

A brand, not a firm

The same reasoning applied to a product line rather than a company, with the eleventh and Venus read for appeal.

What the reading is not

The astrological question, and the others

What this reading answersWhat has to be checked elsewhere, first
Sits with the founder's chartYes — the seventh, the tenth, Mercury, and where the tradition uses it, a starting sound.Nothing here needs the registry.
Numerological fitWhere asked for — the name's value against the founder's, in a stated system. The system should be named; the results differ between them.
Available to registerNot read. The chart does not know the registry. The company registrar and the trademark office, before the reading.
Free as a domain or a handleNot read.Checked before, or the favoured name is taken.
Whether it will do wellNot read. No name carries a market. That is the business, not the name — and not astrology.

A business name has to pass several tests, and only one of them is astrological. The right column is checked first, because a name the tradition favours and the registry, the market or the law refuses is not available to be chosen.

Questions worth asking about a business name

Bring candidate names that are already cleared, not a blank sheet. These are the questions that keep the reading on the chart and off the marketing plan.

  1. What do the seventh and the tenth indicate in my chart, and what character of name does that favour?
  2. What is Mercury's dignity here, and does your tradition draw a starting sound from it?
  3. If you are checking numerology, which system — and would another system rank these names differently?
  4. Of these cleared candidates, which sits best with the chart, and why that one over the others?
  5. If there are partners, did you read each chart, and does the favoured name sit with all of them?
  6. What here is doctrine, what is your tradition's custom, and what is numerology as a separate practice?
  7. Is there anything in the chart that would counsel against a whole class of names?
  8. What about this name is not an astrological question at all?

Suitability

Who this reading is for

  • A business is being started and the family wants the name chosen with the founder's chart in view.
  • Several cleared candidate names are on the table and the family wants them ranked against the chart.
  • The family's tradition includes a numerological check and wants it done in a stated system.
  • Partners are involved and want the name read against each of their charts.
  • A business is being renamed and the family wants the traditional reading before the change.
  • You want the astrological question answered on its own, separately from the legal and commercial ones.
  • You would rather be told which of your own candidates sits best than be handed a name from nowhere.

No name carries a market, and a reading that says a name will do well has left astrology for something else. This consultation reads the founder's chart and, where asked, a numerological value; it does not and cannot check availability, trademark or domain, all of which must be cleared first. Where partners are involved, each chart should be read with that partner's knowledge. The name is the family's to choose; the chart is one voice in that choice.

Before you book

What to have ready

  • Date of birth, time of birth as precisely as you know it, and place of birth.
  • Say so if the birth time is uncertain — it can be narrowed by rectification rather than guessed.
  • The specific question you want answered, which focuses the reading far more than a general request.
  • For a property or premises, the floor plan and the direction the main entrance faces.

Do not act on a reading alone where a decision also needs professional advice — medical, legal or financial. A consultation is one input, and it is offered as one.

Common questions

Before you book

Will you check whether the name is available to register?

No, and this is worth being clear about before you get attached to a suggestion. Company name availability, domain availability and trademark clearance are legal and commercial checks with nothing astrological about them. Run them first, then bring the surviving shortlist here.

Does the name itself have a chart?

No. What is read is the founder's chart. Where a numerological check is included it works on the letters of the name, but that is a different system and is described as such rather than blended into the astrology.

We have five candidate names. Can you rank them?

A shortlist can be narrowed on the traditional reasoning, with that reasoning stated so you can weigh it against everything else that decides a name — how it sounds, how it travels, and whether it is free to use.

Which languages is the reading available in?

Telugu, Hindi and English. Ask for the one you want when you book.
