🎁 For Ganapathi Pooja

Ganapathi Pooja Kit — the Ganesh Puja Samagri List

Every item on the Ganesh puja samagri list, gathered into one box for a Ganapathi Pooja at home — on Vinayaka Chavithi, on Sankatahara Chaturthi, or before any new beginning. The list below says what each item is for and what it is called in Telugu, so you can check it against your purohit's list.

About this kit

What the Ganapathi Pooja Kit is for

About Ganapathi Pooja →

Ganapathi is worshipped first in every Vedic ceremony and on his own festival days, and the samagri for his pooja is short but particular. Two items are his alone: durva grass (garike), offered in bunches of twenty-one blades during the archana, and the modak, the steamed sweet placed as naivedyam. The rest — the archana powders, the tamboolam, the coconut and the lamps — is the common ground of every household pooja, sized here for one family and one sitting.

The kit is assembled in the Telugu household form used across Hyderabad: red hibiscus and durva for the archana, twenty-one names or the Ashtottara for the archana count, and undrallu or modak for the naivedyam. For Vinayaka Chavithi the clay idol, the palavelli canopy and the twenty-one patri leaves are arranged separately, because they are fresh and because families source them differently — tell us if you want them added.

What is in the box

Contents — 7 items, and what each is for

Item 1

Kumkum, turmeric, sandal paste, akshata and loose flowers

Kumkuma, pasupu, gandham, akshintalu and poolu — the archana set. Turmeric makes the small Ganapathi (pasupu Ganapathi) that opens the pooja; akshata is offered with each name; flowers and kumkum go on with the Ashtottara.

Item 2

Durva grass (garike)

Garike is Ganapathi's particular offering: bunches of three or twenty-one blades placed at his feet through the archana. Supplied fresh against the ceremony date.

Item 3

Betel leaves and areca nuts

Tamalapaku and vakkalu — the tamboolam, offered at the close and given to the purohit with the dakshina. Two leaves and one nut per set.

Item 4

Coconut, banana and jaggery

Kobbarikaya is broken at the naivedyam; bananas (arati pandu) and jaggery (bellam) are placed with it and shared as prasadam.

Item 5

Camphor, agarbatti and sambrani

Karpuram for the mangala harathi at the end, agarbatti for the dhoopam upachara, sambrani to prepare the room before the pooja begins.

Item 6

Cotton wicks and lamp oil

Vathulu and deepam oil for the two lamps lit before the sankalpam and kept burning until the harathi.

Item 7

Modak mould and prasadam ingredients

The mould and the rice flour, jaggery and coconut for undrallu or modakam — Ganapathi's naivedyam, steamed at home on the morning of the pooja.

Samagri requirements vary with regional tradition, family custom and the performing priest. This list is what the kit is normally assembled with — confirm the final contents with your purohit before dispatch. Fresh items are supplied against your ceremony date.

Through the ceremony

How the samagri is used in Ganapathi Pooja

1

Preparing the place

Sambrani is lit and carried through the room, the peetham is set with a fresh cloth, and the two lamps are filled with the deepam oil and wicks from the kit and lit. A rangoli or a small kolam goes in front.

2

Pasupu Ganapathi and sankalpam

A cone of turmeric paste is shaped into the small Ganapathi on a betel leaf with a few akshata grains, and the family states the sankalpam — their gotram, names and the purpose of the pooja — with the purohit.

3

Avahanam and shodashopachara

Ganapathi is invoked into the idol or the turmeric image and offered the sixteen services: water, sandal paste, akshata, flowers, incense and lamp, each from the kit in turn.

4

Archana with durva and flowers

The Ashtottara or the twenty-one names are recited, and with each name a blade of garike, a flower or a pinch of akshata is placed at Ganapathi's feet. Red hibiscus, if available, goes on here.

5

Naivedyam

The coconut is broken and set with the bananas, jaggery and the modak or undrallu; the purohit offers them with the naivedyam mantras. The family's own dishes can be added.

6

Harathi and tamboolam

Camphor is lit for the mangala harathi, mantra pushpam is offered, and the pooja closes with the tamboolam and dakshina to the purohit and prasadam to the family.

Common questions

Before you book

What is on the Ganesh puja samagri list?

Turmeric and kumkum, sandal paste, akshata, flowers, durva grass, betel leaves and areca nuts, a coconut, bananas and jaggery, camphor, agarbatti, cotton wicks and lamp oil, and the modak or undrallu for naivedyam. The kit above holds all of it; the idol, the fresh patri and the family's own vessels are provided at home.

Is this the Vinayaka Chavithi pooja samagri list in Telugu?

It is the same list — the annotated contents give each item's Telugu name in Latin script: pasupu, kumkuma, gandham, akshintalu, garike, tamalapaku, vakkalu, kobbarikaya, karpuram, vathulu. For Vinayaka Chavithi add the clay idol, the palavelli and the twenty-one patri leaves, which are arranged separately because they are fresh.

Why is durva grass essential for Ganesh puja?

Durva (garike) is Ganapathi's particular offering; the Ganapathi Atharvashirsha and the puranic accounts single it out, and the archana is traditionally performed with bunches of twenty-one blades. It is in every Ganesh pooja list regardless of region.

How many items are in the Ganapathi Pooja Kit?

Seven groups, listed above, covering the archana powders, durva, tamboolam, the fruit and coconut, incense and camphor, the lamp wicks and oil, and the modak mould with its ingredients. Quantities suit one family pooja; ask for larger quantities for a Ganapathi Homam or a temple-scale sathabhishekam.

Does the kit include the Ganesh idol?

No. Families keep a permanent idol or picture for the household pooja, and for Vinayaka Chavithi the clay idol is chosen in person. Turmeric for the pasupu Ganapathi, which opens every pooja, is in the kit.

Can I use this kit for Sankatahara Chaturthi?

Yes. The samagri for the monthly Sankatahara Chaturthi pooja is the same list, and the kit is sized for one sitting; the naivedyam that evening is usually undrallu or modak, which the kit's mould and ingredients cover.
