A muhurtham depends on the date, the place, the ceremony and the almanac used to compute it. This note separates what is consistently described in published practice from what genuinely varies, and states plainly which parts are AnugrahaSidhiโ€™s recommendation rather than a rule.

Consistently described

Points on which published practice broadly agrees.

  • A muhurtham is selected from the five limbs of the panchangam โ€” tithi, vara, nakshatra, yoga and karana โ€” for the specific date, place and purpose.
  • Periods conventionally avoided, including rahukalam, yamagandam, durmuhurtham and varjyam, are clock times that shift daily and by location.
  • The same date can be suitable for one ceremony and unsuitable for another, because the criteria differ by ritual.

Varies by tradition

Real differences between families, regions and sampradayams โ€” not errors.

  • Drik-ganita and Vakya almanacs compute the same day differently, and the resulting times can diverge by more than a few minutes.
  • Family and community customs add their own conditions, such as avoiding particular months or requiring a specific nakshatra.
  • The weight given to the bride's and the groom's charts in a wedding muhurtham differs between practitioners.

  • Give the exact place the ceremony will be held. A muhurtham computed for a different city is not the same time.
  • Ask whether the time was derived from a Drik or a Vakya panchangam, and use one convention consistently.
