Transit Analysis, or gochara, reads where the grahas are moving now against your natal chart — particularly the slower ones, Saturn and Jupiter, whose transits last long enough to define a period. It is read together with the dasha, since neither answers a timing question alone.

When is Transit Analysis useful?
It is asked for at a Saturn or Jupiter transit, during sade sati, or when deciding when to act on something.
Astrologers differ on method — ayanamsa, dasha system and house division are all matters on which respected traditions disagree. A reading states which conventions it follows, and describes tendency and timing rather than settling a decision for you.

- Saturn from the Janma Rasi
- Sade sati is Saturn's passage through the twelfth, first and second houses counted from the natal Moon — about seven and a half years in total. Which of the three is running matters, because they are not read alike.
- Kantaka and Ashtama Shani
- Saturn in the fourth from the Moon is kantaka shani and in the eighth is ashtama shani. Both are distinct from sade sati and are frequently confused with it.
- Jupiter's transit
- Jupiter moves through a sign a year and aspects the fifth, seventh and ninth from itself, so a single transit touches four houses of your chart at once.
- The dasha underneath
- A transit acts through the dasha, not instead of it. The same Saturn transit reads differently under a favourable mahadasha than under a difficult one, which is why gochara alone is not a reading.

What is established, and what varies
The first list is what published practice describes consistently. The second is where schools, regions and sampradayams legitimately differ — and where the astrologer’s own tradition decides the answer rather than a general rule.
Consistently described
- Sade sati is Saturn transiting the 12th, 1st and 2nd houses from the natal Moon, lasting roughly seven and a half years in total.
- Saturn in the 4th from the natal Moon is called kantaka shani and in the 8th ashtama shani; these are separate from sade sati.
- Jupiter aspects the 5th, 7th and 9th houses from wherever it stands, so one transit engages four houses at once.
Varies by tradition
- Whether transits are read from the Moon or from the lagna. South Indian practice reads from the Janma Rasi as standard; other schools read from the lagna, and the two give different houses.
- Whether the vedha system — a transit cancelled by another graha in a specific house — is applied. It is classical and is frequently omitted in modern readings.
- How the ashtakavarga scores are used to qualify a transit, which practitioners weight very differently.

The vocabulary of a transit reading
Transit Analysis — gochara — reads where the grahas are moving now against where they stood at your birth. The slow ones matter most: Saturn takes about two and a half years to a sign and Jupiter about one, so their transits last long enough to define a period. Sade sati, kantaka shani and ashtama shani are all Saturn transits counted from the natal Moon, and the reading says which if any is in effect. A transit is read with the dasha, never instead of it, because neither answers a timing question alone.
- Gochara
- The transit — where a graha is in the sky now, set against your natal chart. Every graha transits, but the fast ones pass in days and the reading is about the slow ones.
- From the Janma Rasi
- Transits are conventionally counted from the natal Moon's sign, not from the lagna, though many astrologers read both. Which was used changes the answer, and the reading should say.
- Sade sati
- Saturn transiting the twelfth, first and second houses from the natal Moon — roughly seven and a half years, in three phases. The most asked-about transit, and the most often misdescribed as simply bad.
- Kantaka and ashtama shani
- Saturn in the fourth from the Moon is kantaka; in the eighth, ashtama. Separate transits from sade sati, each with its own classical reading, and each shorter.
- Jupiter's passage
- Roughly a sign a year. Which house from the Moon it occupies is read for what the year supports, and its aspects — the fifth, seventh and ninth from itself — for where that support reaches.
- Vedha and ashtakavarga
- The classical refinements. Vedha is a transit obstructed by another graha's position; ashtakavarga scores each sign for each graha from the natal chart. Both can turn a nominally difficult transit into an ordinary one, and both should be checked before a transit is called bad.

All three are Saturn counted from the natal Moon, and they are separate — a person is not in all of them at once, and the reading should say which one, if any, applies. Each is qualified by vedha and by ashtakavarga before it is called difficult.

A transit is not fate. Sade sati is a passage that everyone alive experiences repeatedly, and what it brings is decided by the chart it crosses and the dasha running under it — not by its name. Postponing a decision until a transit passes is sometimes wise and sometimes an excuse, and the reading should say which. Common questions
Before you book
Is sade sati always bad?
That framing is more popular than classical. It is a long transit of three houses from the Moon, the three phases are read differently, and how it reads at all depends on Saturn's dignity in your chart and on the dasha running underneath. Treating seven and a half years as uniformly bad is not what the method says.
Why does one astrologer say I am in sade sati and another says not?
Almost always because one is reading from the Moon and the other from the lagna, or because they use different ayanamsas and your Moon sits near a sign boundary. Ask which reference point was used; a reading should state it.
Should I postpone something until a transit passes?
A transit of Saturn runs two and a half years to a sign, and sade sati runs seven and a half. Postponing a real decision that long is rarely a reasonable use of a reading. Choosing a muhurtham within a window you have already settled on is the more usual way to use timing.
What if I do not know my exact birth time?
Say so rather than estimating. The lagna moves through a full sign in roughly two hours and every divisional chart is computed from the same degrees, so a guessed time propagates an error through the whole reading. Where the time is genuinely unknown the standard approach is rectification — narrowing it by testing candidate lagnas against events that have already happened.
