Astrologers differ on method — ayanamsa, dasha system and house division are all matters on which respected traditions disagree. A reading states which conventions it follows, and describes tendency and timing rather than settling a decision for you.

What is established, and what varies
The first list is what published practice describes consistently. The second is where schools, regions and sampradayams legitimately differ — and where the astrologer’s own tradition decides the answer rather than a general rule.

- The tenth bhava is the karma or profession house in every standard text, and the Dasamsa (D-10) is the divisional chart assigned to it.
- The sixth house is read for employment and service — the condition of working for another — as distinct from the tenth, which is the work itself.
- Saturn is the karaka of occupation and Sun the karaka of authority, and both are assessed for dignity before the houses are interpreted.
Varies by tradition
- Whether the tenth is counted from the lagna, from the Moon, or from the Sun. Practitioners differ, and a reading should say which it used.
- How a modern occupation maps onto classical significations. The texts describe trades that no longer exist and are silent on ones that now do, so any mapping to a present-day field is interpretive.
- Whether the D-10 is read as a chart in its own right or only for the dignity of the tenth lord within it.

Can a chart name the job I should take?
No, and an astrologer who names one is going beyond what the method supports. A chart indicates the character of work it inclines towards — independent or institutional, technical or people-facing, steady or variable — and the periods that support a change. Choosing between two named offers involves salary, location, family and your own judgement, none of which is in the chart.
Does the chart show whether I should start something of my own?
It shows what the tenth and seventh houses and their lords indicate about working independently versus in an organisation, and which dasha periods support a change of that kind. It says nothing about whether a specific business idea is sound, which is a commercial question.
My career has stalled. Will the chart say why?
It will say what the running dasha and the transits over the tenth house indicate about the period, and whether that period is one classical practice associates with slow progress. That is an explanation of timing, not a diagnosis of a workplace.
What if I do not know my exact birth time?
Say so rather than estimating. The lagna moves through a full sign in roughly two hours and every divisional chart is computed from the same degrees, so a guessed time propagates an error through the whole reading. Where the time is genuinely unknown the standard approach is rectification — narrowing it by testing candidate lagnas against events that have already happened.
