Bhoomi Pooja Kit — the Bhoomi Puja Samagri List

The bhoomi puja samagri list for the day the ground is broken — the naga pratima and navaratna placed in the foundation pit, the nine grains, the kalasam, and the first bricks laid at the muhurtham. One box for Bhoomi Pooja (Bhumi Pujan) on a plot before construction begins, annotated below.

About this kit

What the Bhoomi Pooja Kit is for

About Bhoomi Pooja →

Bhoomi Pooja asks the earth's permission before it is dug, and pacifies the nagas and the Vastu Purusha who hold the plot. Its samagri is the set of things placed in the foundation pit: the silver naga, the navaratna and navadhanyam, a turmeric root, coins and sometimes a small copper plate, all laid at the north-east corner at the muhurtham before the first brick. The pooja is short and takes place on the open plot, so the kit is packed for outdoors.

The kit carries the naga pratima, the navaratna set, the navadhanyam, the copper kalasam and thread, the bricks and turmeric root and coins for the foundation, and supplies the coconut, banana and betel leaves fresh against the muhurtham. Many families follow it with a Ganapathi Homam or a Vastu Pooja on site; those kits can be packed with it.

Through the ceremony

How the samagri is used in Bhoomi Pooja

1

Marking the corner

The north-east corner of the plot is cleared and marked with rice flour and turmeric, a small pit is dug there, and the peetham is set beside it with the kalasam.

2

Sankalpam and Ganapathi Pooja

The owner states the sankalpam for the building; Ganapathi is worshipped first with turmeric, akshata and a flower.

3

Bhoomi Devi and naga pooja

Bhoomi Devi is invoked into the kalasam and the earth, the naga pratima is worshipped with milk and flowers, and the Vastu Purusha is asked for permission to dig.

4

The foundation offering

The naga, the navaratna, the navadhanyam, the turmeric root and the coins are placed in the pit with mantras, and kalasam water is poured over them.

5

Laying the first bricks

At the muhurtham the owner lays the five marked bricks in the pit, and the first spade of earth is turned; the coconut is broken.

6

Harathi and prasadam

Camphor harathi, mantra pushpam and tamboolam to the purohit close the pooja; a homam or Vastu Pooja follows where arranged.

Common questions

Before you book

What is on the bhoomi puja samagri list?

The archana powders and flowers; a silver naga pratima; navadhanyam and a navaratna set; a copper kalasam with thread; five bricks, a turmeric root and coins for the foundation; coconut, banana and betel leaves; camphor and agarbatti. Milk, rice, rice flour and fruit are brought from home.

What goes into the foundation pit?

The silver naga, the nine gems, the nine grains, a whole turmeric root and coins, placed with mantras at the north-east corner and covered by the first bricks. Some families add a small copper plate or a Vastu yantra; the purohit will say what your family's form includes.

Where on the plot is Bhoomi Pooja performed?

At the north-east (Ishanya) corner, the spot the Vastu Purusha's head rests on, facing east or north. The muhurtham is fixed from the owner's horoscope and the Panchangam; the Bhoomi Pooja page sets out the factors.

Is Bhoomi Pooja the same as Vastu Pooja?

No. Bhoomi Pooja is performed before construction, on the open plot; Vastu Pooja or Vastu Shanti is performed in the finished building before it is occupied. A Ganapathi Homam or Vastu Pooja is often added to the Bhoomi Pooja day; those kits can be packed with this one.

Can the kit be delivered to a construction site?

Yes — give the site address and a contact on site, and the muhurtham time so the fresh items arrive that morning.
