Griha Pravesh Kit — the Griha Pravesh Puja Samagri List

The griha pravesh puja samagri list for the day you enter a new home — the kalasam carried over the threshold, the milk boiled over in the new kitchen, the mango-leaf toranam on the door and the nine grains for the Vastu offering. One box for Gruha Pravesham, annotated below so you can check it against your purohit's list.

About this kit

What the Griha Pravesh Kit is for

About Gruha Pravesham →

Gruha Pravesham is a sequence of small rituals rather than one pooja: the toranam and rangoli at the door, the kalasam carried in by the couple at the muhurtham, Ganapathi Pooja and the Vastu offering inside, the milk boiled until it spills over in the new kitchen, and often a Satyanarayana Pooja or a homam later in the day. The samagri therefore runs from the threshold items to the kitchen, and this kit is arranged in that order.

The kit carries the brass kalasam, the boiling vessel, the navadhanyam and rock salt, rangoli powder, camphor, wicks and oil, and supplies the toranam, mango leaves and coconut fresh against your muhurtham. For the Vastu Pooja or Vastu Shanti that many families add, and for a homam on the day, see the Vastu Pooja Kit and the homam kits; we pack them together.

What is in the box

Kumkum, turmeric, sandal paste, akshata and loose flowers

The archana set for the Ganapathi Pooja and Vastu offering; turmeric and kumkum also mark the threshold and the door frame.

The purna kumbham the couple carry over the threshold at the muhurtham — filled with water, a coin and akshata, dressed with mango leaves and topped with the coconut.

Item 3

Milk-boiling vessel

A new vessel for the first act in the kitchen: milk boiled on the new stove until it spills over, facing east, and shared as the first prasadam of the house.

Item 4

Navadhanyam and rock salt

The nine grains for the Vastu Purusha offering placed in the house, and rock salt (rati uppu) set in a corner as the custom holds.

Item 5

Threshold torana and mango-leaf string

The mavidaku toranam tied across the main door and the marigold or flower toranam over it, supplied fresh for the day.

Item 6

Rangoli powder

Muggu for the threshold, the doorway and the pooja place inside — the first decoration of the new home.

Item 7

Camphor, agarbatti, wicks and lamp oil

Lamps lit at the door and inside at the muhurtham, agarbatti for the dhoopam and karpuram for the harathi.

Samagri requirements vary with regional tradition, family custom and the performing priest. This list is what the kit is normally assembled with — confirm the final contents with your purohit before dispatch. Fresh items are supplied against your ceremony date.

Through the ceremony

How the samagri is used in Gruha Pravesham

1

Dressing the door

Before the muhurtham the toranam is tied across the main door, the frame is marked with turmeric and kumkum, and the rangoli is drawn on the threshold.

2

The kalasam at the threshold

At the muhurtham the couple carry the filled kalasam over the threshold with the right foot first, and place it on rice at the pooja spot inside.

3

Ganapathi Pooja and sankalpam

Ganapathi is worshipped and the sankalpam stated for the family's entry; the Vastu Purusha is offered the navadhanyam and invoked to protect the house.

4

Boiling the milk

In the kitchen the new vessel is set on the stove and milk boiled until it rises and spills over — the sign of abundance — then sweetened and shared.

5

Lamps through the house

Lamps are lit in every room and the salt placed; the family walks through with the kalasam water sprinkled in each.

6

The day's pooja

Satyanarayana Pooja, Vastu Shanti or a homam follows as the family has arranged, and the day closes with harathi and the meal for the guests.

Common questions

Before you book

What is on the griha pravesh puja samagri list?

The archana powders and flowers; a brass kalasam with coconut and mango leaves; a new vessel for boiling milk; navadhanyam and rock salt; the door toranam and mango-leaf string; rangoli powder; and camphor, agarbatti, wicks and lamp oil. Milk, rice and the deity images are provided by the family.

Does the kit include the Vastu Pooja or Satyanarayana Pooja samagri?

It covers the entry rituals — threshold, kalasam, Vastu offering, milk boiling. The Vastu Pooja Kit adds the Vastu Purusha yantra and navaloha for a full Vastu Shanti, and the Satyanarayana Pooja Kit covers that vratam; order them together and they are packed for the same date.

Why is milk boiled over at a housewarming?

The milk rising and spilling over the rim is the first act in the new kitchen and a traditional sign that the house will overflow with plenty. It is done at the muhurtham, facing east, and the sweetened milk is the first prasadam shared in the house.

Is the toranam fresh or artificial?

Fresh mango leaves strung the day before, supplied against your muhurtham; an artificial toranam can be substituted for an apartment where the leaves cannot be replaced.

What is the right muhurtham for Gruha Pravesham?

A muhurtham is fixed from the family's horoscopes and the Panchangam, avoiding certain months and tithis. The Gruha Pravesham page explains the factors, and a muhurtham can be requested before the kit is ordered.
