Rashi-based Names are derived from the moon sign — the Janma Rasi — rather than from the nakshatra pada. Each rashi spans thirty degrees, contains two and a quarter nakshatras and so nine padas, and carries a set of syllables rather than one; because the Moon spends about two and a quarter days in a sign, the date alone usually fixes it. It is the broader of the two methods, the fallback when the birth time cannot fix a pada, and the custom in some families regardless. Where the nakshatra and rashi syllables differ, the family's own tradition decides.

- Often. The pada syllable is one of the rashi's nine, but the rashi list as conventionally given does not always include it, and the family's custom is what decides — not a rule that one overrides the other.
- Household custom
- Some families name by rashi generation after generation; others by nakshatra. The reading should ask which, and follow it, rather than impose the finer method as if it were more correct.
- Precision
- The rashi needs the date and, near a sign boundary, the time to the hour. It is not a less accurate method — it is a coarser one, answering a coarser question, and that is not the same thing.

Each rashi holds nine padas from two or three nakshatras, and its syllable set comes from those. The boundary nakshatras — the ones split between two signs — are where a birth near the edge needs the time.

Which should we follow — rashi or nakshatra?
Whichever your family follows. Neither is more correct. If your household has no established practice, the nakshatra pada method is the narrower and more commonly used of the two, but this is genuinely a matter of custom rather than of doctrine.
Is rashi here the same as my zodiac sign?
No. Janma Rasi is the sign the Moon was in, and it uses the sidereal zodiac. A western sun sign is a different body and a different zodiac, and the two rarely agree.
Is this method less accurate because it needs less precise timing?
Less precise is not less accurate — it is a different unit. Rashi naming works at the sign level by design. It is more forgiving of an uncertain birth time, which is one reason families with no recorded time often use it.
