A Horoscope Reading is a general reading of the whole chart rather than an answer to one question. The astrologer works through the lagna, the placement of the grahas, the running dasha and the current transits, and reports what stands out.

When is Horoscope Reading useful?
It is the usual starting point when there is no single pressing question, or when you want the chart read once properly before deciding what to ask about.
Astrologers differ on method — ayanamsa, dasha system and house division are all matters on which respected traditions disagree. A reading states which conventions it follows, and describes tendency and timing rather than settling a decision for you.

What the astrologer reads for Horoscope Reading
- The kendras (1, 4, 7, 10)
- The angular houses are read first because a graha in a kendra acts more visibly than the same graha elsewhere, and the lords of these four describe the shape of the life the chart is about.
- The trikonas (1, 5, 9)
- The trine houses carry what classical texts treat as merit and support; the relationship between a kendra lord and a trikona lord is where most named yogas come from.
- Graha dignity
- The same graha in the same house reads differently exalted than debilitated, so dignity is established before any house is interpreted.
- Dasha against gochara
- A placement indicates; the dasha decides when it is active and the transit decides whether the moment supports it. None of the three answers a timing question alone.

What is established, and what varies
The first list is what published practice describes consistently. The second is where schools, regions and sampradayams legitimately differ — and where the astrologer’s own tradition decides the answer rather than a general rule.
Consistently described
- Houses 1, 4, 7 and 10 are the kendras or angles; 1, 5 and 9 are the trikonas or trines. Both sets are treated as strong positions.
- Houses 6, 8 and 12 are the trik or dusthana houses, associated with difficulty rather than with support.
- A graha within a few degrees of the Sun is treated as combust, and classical texts read a combust graha as weakened regardless of its sign.
Varies by tradition
- Whether a reading opens from the lagna or from the Janma Rasi. Much of South Indian practice reads from the Moon as well as the lagna, and the two can emphasise different houses.
- How much weight the divisional charts carry. Some astrologers read the D-9 alongside the D-1 throughout; others consult it only for the questions it governs.
- Which yogas are treated as significant. The classical lists run to hundreds, and no two practitioners weight them identically.

The frame a general reading is built on
A Horoscope Reading is the whole chart read once, properly, with nothing asked of it yet. The astrologer works outward from the lagna through the four kendras, establishes the dignity of each graha before interpreting any house, names the yogas that are actually present, and reads the running dasha against the current transits. What comes back is what stands out — which is the right first reading when you do not yet know what to ask.
- The kendras
- Houses 1, 4, 7 and 10 — the angles. A graha in one of these acts more visibly than the same graha elsewhere, so a general reading starts with the four and the lords that rule them.
- The trikonas
- Houses 1, 5 and 9 — the trines, which classical texts treat as the seats of merit and support. Most of the named yogas are a kendra lord and a trikona lord in relationship.
- The dusthanas
- Houses 6, 8 and 12. Associated with difficulty rather than support, and read for what a chart has to work against rather than for what it is given.
- Dignity
- Whether a graha is exalted, debilitated, in its own sign, combust or retrograde. Settled before any house is interpreted, because the same graha in the same house reads differently depending on it.
- Yoga
- A named combination — two grahas in a specified relationship that the texts single out. The classical lists run to hundreds; a reading names the ones present and says how strong they are, not every one it could find.
- Dasha against gochara
- The running period set against the current transits. A placement indicates, the dasha says when it is live, the transit says whether the moment supports it — and none of the three times anything alone.

Where a general reading usually leads
A general reading is a survey. Where it turns something up, the next step is the reading built for that one question, which goes into a set of houses and its divisional chart at a depth a survey cannot.
Work and standing
The tenth bhava came up. The career reading takes it further — the tenth with the sixth and the second, and the Dasamsa, which a general reading does not open.

The two are not competing products. Most people take the general reading first, because it tells them which of the specific ones is worth asking for, and a specific reading assumes the chart has already been looked at whole.

Questions worth asking of a general reading
A survey is easy to receive passively. These turn it into something you can follow and check, and the last two tell you how much of what you heard is method and how much is the astrologer's own tradition.
- Did you read from the lagna, from the Moon, or both — and where did the two disagree?
- Which grahas in this chart are in good dignity, and which are not?
- Which yogas are actually present, and how strong is each one, rather than just present?
- Which mahadasha and bhukti am I in, and when does the bhukti change?
- Is a Saturn or Jupiter transit doing anything significant to this chart right now?
- What in this chart would you want a closer reading of, and which reading would that be?
- What did you look at and find nothing worth reporting?
- Which of the things you have said are settled doctrine, and which are your school's reading?
Suitability
Who this reading is for
- You have never had your chart read and want it looked at whole before deciding what to ask.
- Several things are going on at once and no single one of them is the question.
- You have had readings before that went straight to one topic, and want the rest of the chart seen.
- A relative has been told something about your chart and you want it read afresh, from the beginning.
- You want to know which of the specific readings on this site would actually be worth your time.
- You know your rasi and your nakshatra and nothing else, and want the vocabulary filled in on your own chart.
- You want a difficult period named and explained, without a question narrower than that.
It is a survey, and a survey is shallow by design. A general reading will name what stands out and will not go far into any of it — that is the job of the specific readings, and an astrologer who covers the whole chart and every question in one sitting has covered none of them. It also describes tendency and timing, not outcome, and nothing in it replaces medical, legal or financial advice.

- Say so if the birth time is uncertain — it can be narrowed by rectification rather than guessed.
- The specific question you want answered, which focuses the reading far more than a general request.

Common questions
Before you book
How is this different from asking about one specific area?
A general reading surveys the chart and reports what stands out, which is useful when you do not yet know what to ask. A career or marriage reading goes into one set of houses and its divisional chart in far more depth. Many people take the general reading first and then a specific one.
Is a Vedic horoscope reading the same as a sun-sign horoscope?
No, and the difference is large. A sun-sign column sorts everyone born in a month into one of twelve groups. A Vedic reading is cast from your own date, time and place, and uses the sidereal zodiac, so even the sign placements often differ from the western tropical ones.
Will the reading tell me something bad?
It will tell you what the chart indicates, including difficult periods, because a reading that reports only favourable things is not a reading. What it will not do is present a period as fated or a remedy as a guarantee.
What if I do not know my exact birth time?
Say so rather than estimating. The lagna moves through a full sign in roughly two hours and every divisional chart is computed from the same degrees, so a guessed time propagates an error through the whole reading. Where the time is genuinely unknown the standard approach is rectification — narrowing it by testing candidate lagnas against events that have already happened.
