Kuja Dosha — also called Mangal Dosha, or being Manglik — is the condition where Mars occupies the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of a chart. It is checked almost entirely in the context of marriage matching. A large proportion of charts carry it in some form, and traditional practice recognises a long list of conditions under which it cancels.
How the placement is judged
The houses counted are those bearing on marriage, household and longevity, which is why the dosha is read as a marriage matter rather than a general affliction. The counting is conventionally done from the lagna, and many practitioners also check from the Moon and from Venus, treating the dosha as significant when it appears from more than one reference.
Strength matters as much as presence. Practitioners look at which sign Mars occupies, whether it is aspected by benefics, and whether the house it sits in is one it owns — a Mars in its own or exalted sign is generally read as a far weaker affliction than the same house placement in a debilitated sign.
When it cancels
Traditional texts list a number of cancellation conditions, and any careful matching checks them before the dosha is treated as an obstacle. The common ones are:
- Both charts carry the dosha — the standard and most widely applied cancellation in matching.
- Mars is in its own sign or exalted, or occupies a sign where the placement is held not to apply.
- Mars is conjunct or aspected by Jupiter, or in some readings by another strong benefic.
- The dosha appears from the lagna but not from the Moon or Venus, so it is read as partial.
- Age at marriage — several traditions hold the effect reduced after a stated age.
What this means in practice
The honest position is that Kuja Dosha is common, frequently cancelled, and routinely overstated. A matching that reports “Manglik” as a verdict without saying which houses, from which references, at what strength, and against which cancellations, has not done the work. If a remedy is proposed, ask what specifically in the chart it addresses — and expect to be told plainly when a cancellation already applies and nothing is needed.
