Krishna Janmashtami falls on Ashtami of the dark fortnight of Shravana masam. The observance is built around midnight, the traditional hour of the birth: a fast is kept through the day, the principal pooja is performed at nishita kaal, and the fast is broken after it.
The midnight pooja
The birth is traditionally placed at midnight, in Rohini nakshatra, and the principal pooja is performed at nishita kaal โ the middle watch of the night, computed from local sunset and sunrise rather than being clock midnight. The window is short, typically under an hour, and it is local to your place.
Because the observance depends on the Ashtami tithi and, in some reckonings, on Rohini nakshatra being current at that hour, the date occasionally differs between calendars and between Smarta and Vaishnava reckonings. Take the year's date and window from a current panchangam.
The fast
The fast is kept from sunrise on Ashtami and broken after the midnight pooja, which makes it one of the longer household fasts in the year. A partial fast admitting fruit, milk and non-grain preparations is widely kept instead, and where a full fast is kept it is customarily broken with the naivedyam offered at the pooja.
Households that do not keep the midnight vigil generally perform the pooja in the evening and break the fast then, which is a recognised accommodation rather than a departure.
Household observances
The elements customary in Telugu households are small and specific.
- Tiny footprints drawn in rice flour from the doorway to the shrine, marking the child's arrival.
- A cradle, with an infant Krishna placed in it at the midnight pooja.
- Naivedyam of butter, curd and preparations of milk โ the offerings associated with the child Krishna.
- Recitation from the Bhagavata, or the Vishnu Sahasranama, through the vigil.
- Utlu โ the pot-breaking observed publicly in some places on the following day.
What is established, and what varies
These are kept apart deliberately. The first list is what published practice describes consistently; the second is where families, regions and sampradayams legitimately differ, and where a Purohitโs own tradition decides the answer rather than a general rule.
Consistently described
- Janmashtami falls on Shravana Krishna Ashtami, and the principal pooja is performed at nishita kaal.
- Nishita kaal is computed from local sunset and sunrise, so the window differs by location.
- The fast is customarily broken after the midnight pooja.
Varies by tradition
- Smarta and Vaishnava reckonings sometimes place the observance on different days.
- Whether Rohini nakshatra is required to coincide differs by tradition and affects the date chosen.
- The strictness of the fast, and whether the vigil is kept to midnight, are household decisions.
