The Hanuman Chalisa is the most recited Hanuman prayer in India: forty chaupais and three dohas in Awadhi, composed by Goswami Tulsidas in the sixteenth century. It is sung at lamp-lighting, before a journey, in fear and in illness, and taken up as a counted vow — eleven or a hundred and eight times — on Tuesdays, Saturdays and Hanuman Jayanti. The whole text is below, verse by verse, in the three scripts people ask for.

Want it recited as a vow? Anugraha Siddhi arranges Hanuman Chalisa Parayanam at home in Hyderabad — 11 or 108 times with a Purohit — on +91 90320 22323.

Quick Answer: What Is the Hanuman Chalisa?

A hymn of forty verses (chalisa means "of forty") in praise of Hanuman, composed by Tulsidas, opening with two dohas and closing with one. It is recited daily by millions, and as a counted observance — 11, 21 or 108 times — on Hanuman's days. Its first chaupai:

जय हनुमान ज्ञान गुन सागर।
जय कपीस तिहुँ लोक उजागर॥

Jaya Hanumana gyana guna sagara
Jaya Kapisa tihu loka ujagara

Hanuman Chalisa, verse 1

జయ హనుమాన జ్ఞాన గున సాగర ।
జయ కపీస తిహుఁ లోక ఉజాగర ॥

What Is the Hanuman Chalisa?

Goswami Tulsidas (1511–1623), the author of the Ramcharitmanas, composed the Chalisa in Awadhi, the language of his Ramayana. Tradition places its composition in Varanasi. It praises Hanuman's form and virtues (verses 1–8), retells his deeds in the Ramayana — the leap to Lanka, the burning of the city, the sanjeevani herb, the counsel to Vibhishana (9–19) — and then turns to the devotee: what Hanuman's grace does for those who remember him (20–36), and the fruit of reciting the hymn itself (37–40).

The metre is the chaupai, the four-footed verse of the Ramcharitmanas, which is why the Chalisa is sung to the same tunes. The dohas at the beginning and end are couplets in a different metre; the closing doha is the one most often set to music.

How to Use This Page

Devanagari (Hindi)

The original Awadhi text as Tulsidas wrote it, in the script it is printed in across North India.

Telugu script

The same Awadhi text transliterated into Telugu, so a Telugu reader recites the original without learning Devanagari.

English transliteration

The text in Roman letters under each Devanagari verse — what most people mean by "Hanuman Chalisa in English".

Meaning

A plain-English sense of each verse, not a word-for-word gloss. Recite the verse; read the meaning once so it is not sound alone.

The Telugu Hanuman Chalisa

Telugu families know two Hanuman Chalisas. The first is Tulsidas's original, recited in Telugu script as given above — this is what a Purohit recites in a parayanam, and what temples across Telangana and Andhra sing on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

The second is the Telugu Hanuman Chalisa composed by M. S. Rama Rao between 1972 and 1974 — a Telugu devotional work in its own right, in the same forty-verse structure, that opens శ్రీ హనుమాను గురుదేవు చరణములు and is heard in his own recording in homes across the Telugu states. It is a separate composition rather than a translation, and it remains in copyright, so it is not reproduced here; his recordings and printed editions are widely available, and a Purohit can lead it if that is the text your family sings. When you book a parayanam, say which of the two you want.

How to Recite the Hanuman Chalisa

  • Bathe, or at least wash hands and feet, and sit facing east or north before a Hanuman image or picture.
  • Light a lamp — sesame oil for Hanuman — and offer a flower, sindoor or a betel leaf if you have one.
  • Begin with the two opening dohas, recite the forty chaupais in order, and close with the final doha.
  • Keep an even pace; the chaupai metre carries the recitation once you know the tune. Do not rush the last verses.
  • Follow with the Hanuman aarti if you know it, and a short prayer in your own words.
  • For a counted recitation, keep tally with a mala or with akshata moved from one bowl to another.

How Many Times

Common counts for reciting the Hanuman Chalisa
CountWhenTime
1Daily worship, morning or eveningAbout 10 minutes
7A week-long vow, one a day; or seven on a TuesdayAbout an hour
11Tuesday or Saturday observanceAbout 90 minutes
21A fortnightly or monthly vowAbout three hours
108Ashtottara parayanam — a vow, a difficulty, Hanuman JayantiThree to four hours with a group

Verse 38 says jo sata bara patha kara koi — whoever recites it a hundred times — which is the origin of the 108-times parayanam. A group of readers shares the count; a single reader takes most of a day.

When to Recite

Daily

Morning after bathing, or in the evening at lamp-lighting. Many recite it before sleep.

Tuesdays and Saturdays

Hanuman's days; Saturday is also favoured for Shani-related concerns.

Hanuman Jayanti

Chaitra Purnima — Tuesday, 20 April 2027 — and the Telugu 41-day Deeksha that follows it.

In fear or difficulty

Before a journey, examination or surgery; in illness; when sleep will not come.

The Hanuman Aarti

The Chalisa is usually followed by the aarti Aarti kijai Hanumana lala ki, sung with a lamp waved before the image:

आरती कीजै हनुमान लला की।
दुष्ट दलन रघुनाथ कला की॥

Aarti kijai Hanumana lala ki
Dushta dalana Raghunatha kala ki

Hanuman aarti, opening lines

The aarti is a separate composition, sung to its own tune; a Purohit leads it at the close of a parayanam.

Chalisa Parayanam with a Purohit

Daily recitation needs no one but yourself. Families book a Purohit when the Chalisa is taken up as a sankalpam — a vow with a count — so that the intention is stated correctly, a short Hanuman Puja frames the recitation, the count is kept for a group, and the text is led correctly in Telugu or Hindi. Anugraha Siddhi arranges Hanuman Chalisa Parayanam at home across Hyderabad, and Hanuman Homam or Anjaneya Abhishekam alongside it.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the Hanuman Chalisa?

The Hanuman Chalisa is a devotional hymn of forty verses (chaupais) in praise of Lord Hanuman, composed in Awadhi by the poet-saint Tulsidas in the sixteenth century. It opens with two dohas and closes with one, and is the most widely recited Hanuman prayer in India.

2. Who wrote the Hanuman Chalisa?

Goswami Tulsidas, the author of the Ramcharitmanas, composed it in Awadhi. The final verse names him: Tulsidas sada Hari chera.

3. Is the Hanuman Chalisa available in Telugu?

Yes, in two forms. This page gives Tulsidas's original in Telugu script so a Telugu reader can recite the Chalisa as written. Telugu families also widely sing the Telugu Hanuman Chalisa composed by M. S. Rama Rao in the 1970s, which is a separate Telugu work with the same forty-verse structure.

4. How many times should the Hanuman Chalisa be recited?

Once daily is the common practice. Eleven times is customary for a Tuesday or Saturday observance; one hundred and eight times for a vow, a difficulty or Hanuman Jayanti. Verse 38 itself speaks of reciting it a hundred times.

5. What is the best time to recite the Hanuman Chalisa?

Morning after bathing, or in the evening at lamp-lighting. Tuesdays and Saturdays are Hanuman's days. It is also recited before a journey, an examination or in fear, and at night by those who cannot sleep.

6. What are the benefits of the Hanuman Chalisa?

The text itself promises freedom from fear and disturbance (verses 24–26), relief from illness and pain (25, 36), success in difficult tasks (20) and, in verse 38, release from bondage for one who recites it a hundred times. These are the devotional promises of the hymn; it is recited in faith, not as a guarantee.

7. Can women recite the Hanuman Chalisa?

Yes. The Chalisa is recited by everyone; there is no restriction in the text or in common practice. Some families keep their own customs around particular days, which the Purohit can advise on.

8. What is the Hanuman Chalisa in English?

The transliteration on this page gives the Awadhi text in Roman letters so it can be recited without reading Devanagari or Telugu; the meaning under each verse gives the sense in English. The two together are what most people searching for an English Hanuman Chalisa want.

9. Can I download the Hanuman Chalisa as a PDF?

This page can be printed or saved as a PDF from your browser's print option; every verse is on the page in the three scripts. Printed texts are also available through the Anugraha Siddhi store for a group parayanam.

10. What is Hanuman Chalisa Parayanam?

The counted recitation of the Chalisa — 11, 21 or 108 times — as a vow or observance, led by a Purohit with a short Hanuman Puja before and aarti after. Anugraha Siddhi arranges it at home across Hyderabad.
