The southwest (Nairutya) is the sector Vastu assigns to the principal bedroom, and the standard sleeping prescription is head to the south or east — never to the north. Bed placement asks for the bed clear of the wall corners and not directly under a beam, and mirrors are asked not to face the bed.

Which room, and for whom

The southwest is prescribed for the head of the household, because that sector is treated as the heaviest and most stabilising in the mandala. The northwest is commonly assigned to guests and to unmarried daughters, and the east or north to children. The southeast is the placement most consistently discouraged for a bedroom, being the fire sector.

Sleeping direction

Head to the south is the primary prescription, with head to the east as the common alternative and frequently preferred for students. Head to the west is treated as acceptable in most schools. Head to the north is the one consistently discouraged placement.

The reason usually given for the north prohibition is the body's alignment with the earth's magnetic field — head to the north putting like poles together. That explanation is a traditional rationale rather than an established physical finding, and it is worth stating as such: the prescription is consistent across schools, the mechanism offered for it is not a scientific result.

The bed, beams and mirrors

The placements assessed within the room are few and are mostly achievable without any structural work, which is what makes bedroom Vastu the part of a consultation most people can actually act on.

  • The bed clear of the wall, not pushed into a corner, with space to walk on at least one side.
  • Not directly beneath an exposed beam — a commonly cited defect, remedied by moving the bed or boxing the beam in.
  • Mirrors and dressing tables not facing the bed; a wardrobe mirror is customarily covered or its door kept closed at night.
  • The head of the bed against a solid wall rather than a window.
  • Electronics and heavy storage kept out of the northeast of the room.

What is established, and what varies

These are kept apart deliberately. The first list is what published practice describes consistently; the second is where families, regions and sampradayams legitimately differ, and where a Purohit’s own tradition decides the answer rather than a general rule.

Consistently described

  • The southwest is the prescribed sector for the principal bedroom.
  • Head to the south or east is prescribed for sleeping; head to the north is consistently discouraged.
  • Mirrors facing the bed and beams directly over the bed are consistently cited defects.

Varies by tradition

  • Whether head to the west is treated as acceptable or merely tolerated differs by school.
  • Room assignment by family member follows regional custom as much as text.
  • The magnetic explanation for the north prohibition is a traditional rationale, not a documented physical mechanism, and practitioners differ on whether to offer it.
