When is Marriage Compatibility useful?
It is asked for when a match is being seriously considered, or when a guna score has come out low and the family wants to know what it actually reflects.
Astrologers differ on method — ayanamsa, dasha system and house division are all matters on which respected traditions disagree. A reading states which conventions it follows, and describes tendency and timing rather than settling a decision for you.

- Each seventh house separately
- Before two charts are compared, each is read for what it indicates about marriage on its own. A koota score is computed from birth stars and moon signs and never touches either seventh house.
- Both Navamsa charts
- The D-9 is the marriage varga. Comparing the two D-9 charts is where much of the substance of a compatibility reading sits, and it is the part a scored match omits entirely.
- Gana and Graha Maitri
- Of the kootas, these two are the ones concerned with temperament and mental rapport — six and five points respectively — and they are read here as descriptions rather than as scores.
- The two dasha sequences together
- Compatibility and timing are separate questions that a family usually asks at the same time. Reading both sequences shows whether the period supports the marriage as well as whether the charts do.

What is established, and what varies
The first list is what published practice describes consistently. The second is where schools, regions and sampradayams legitimately differ — and where the astrologer’s own tradition decides the answer rather than a general rule.

- Gana koota carries 6 points and reads temperament through the Deva, Manushya and Rakshasa classes; Graha Maitri carries 5 and reads the friendship of the two moon-sign lords.
- The Navamsa (D-9) is the divisional chart assigned to marriage, and is read for both parties in a full compatibility assessment.
- A koota score is derived from birth nakshatras and moon signs only, so it is a screening instrument rather than a reading of either chart.
Varies by tradition
- Whether the man's or the woman's chart is treated as the reference for particular kootas, which differs between schools.
- How much weight the Navamsa comparison carries relative to the koota score, on which practice varies widely.
- Whether temperament findings are reported to both families or only to the one that commissioned the reading, which is a matter of custom rather than of method.

Marriage Compatibility is the reading behind a match rather than the match itself. Both charts are read individually first — each seventh house, each Navamsa, each dasha sequence — and only then against each other, for temperament through Gana and Graha Maitri, for family circumstances, and for what each chart indicates about timing. It is the reading families ask for when a koota score has come back and they want to know what it reflects, or when they want more than a number before a decision is made.
- Each seventh house, separately
- Before anything is compared, each chart's seventh bhava and its lord are read on their own. What one chart indicates about marriage as such is the frame for what it indicates about this marriage.
- Both Navamsa charts
- The ninth divisional chart, assigned to marriage, read for both parties. It is where the strength of each seventh lord is checked, and where a weak rasi-chart placement is often found to be well supported — or the reverse.
- Gana koota
- Six points, reading temperament through the deva, manushya and rakshasa classification of the two birth stars. The koota most directly about how two people are likely to sit with each other.
- Graha Maitri
- Five points, reading the friendship between the lords of the two moon signs — the tradition's approximation of mental compatibility. With Gana, the part of ashtakoota that is about the people rather than the stars.
- The two dasha sequences
- Where each person is in their own cycle, laid side by side. Two charts that match well but are both in difficult periods are a different proposition from the same match at another time.
- Family circumstances
- The second and fourth of each chart — the household each comes from and the household the marriage forms. Not scored by any koota, and the reason a compatibility reading is wider than a match.

Guna milan is arithmetic from two birth stars and two moon signs. Everything in the right column comes from the rest of the two charts and never reaches the score — which is why two matches on the same total can be nothing alike.

This reads both charts in full — the seventh houses, both Navamsas and both dasha sequences — and explains what the score reflects. Families usually come to this one when a score has raised a question they want understood rather than repeated.

Then this is the reading that is actually useful, because it says what the objection rests on rather than restating the number. Whether to proceed is the family's decision and the reading should not be presented as either permission or prohibition.
Can compatibility be read without the other person's birth time?
Partly. The kootas need only the birth star and moon sign, which are less time-sensitive than the lagna. But the seventh house and the Navamsa comparison — the substance of this reading — both need an accurate time for each chart.
